Sad news perhaps, sit down if you are for some reason standing while using the computer. I have decided to take a break from the daily comic. Yes, no more new comics. I feel like I've gotten what I wanted to accomplish with this project and now it's time to review them, think about what I've learned and how I've changed, and figure out what to do next. I've developed a lot of inhibitions since starting this thing. What would happen is I would notice a pattern in the comics I was making (For example, imbalanced power dynamics between two interacting characters, such that one is dominant and bossy, the other quiet and submissive. Or another example is starting the first panel with someone saying something like "Hey, let's go do *blank*!"). Upon noticing a pattern I would immediately try to stop doing it and it would immediately become an inhibition. The result of this is that my natural impulses have slowly become stifled. This may be part of why I'm having less fun. So, I want to explore these things in relative privacy for a while. Also, I would like to start work on a bigger project. I thought of a character I'd maybe like to develop. His name is Senor Gazpacho and he travels through the desert on a flying cactus.
I may still update occasionally. It's been fun! Even when it wasn't, it was still fun.

That's it, no more queeky comics! I feel like I'm sacrificing my comics to some higher power when I do this. They are stuck online, in low resolution. These cannot go in a newspaper or anything.
This one is good. My art is getting so good.

I would draw more panels of this creature wreaking havoc but I'm tired. Just imagine what it does.

Much of today was spent making a dinosaur out of cardboard and duct tape. I use the term "dinosaur" loosely because I stopped trying to make it look like a dinosaur and just started trying to keep it from falling over. The base is now filled with pennies because I failed.

first time ever!

I did not make a comic yesterday! That's the first time since I started this thing back in December. There were times when I didn't update the blog, but I have always had a comic drawn every day. Yesterday, I straight-up drew no comic. I was busy so to speak and in no state to use a computer last night (el vino did flow).

lizard mugger
lizards do crimes too <--- click that link
I realized I have a bunch of visual reference books that I don't take advantage of at all. Expect to see an inordinate amount of lizards, guns, bones, rain forest flora, planets, medieval warriors, and must-see natural wonders.

The technical difficulties will be worked out soon. Regardless, these animated records of my drawing process are pretty cool I think!
So get this. My name is Nathan Burgess, right? Well, I googled "Nathan Burgess comics" to see if I'd show up. I indeed found Nathan Burgess's web comic. BUT IT'S A DIFFERENT NATHAN BURGESS. Maybe the web comic community is way larger than I imagined, but this coincidence seems improbable to me. Not only that, but he also lives in the Northwest. You should check his comic out, it's pretty funny.

My new operating system is not compatible with my version of photoshop. I also brought Rose's scanner into my room but that's not working either because we don't know where the software is. So I had to try something different tonight.

I got two of my wisdom teeth removed today with only local anesthetic, meaning I was fully conscious. It was so awesome! Luckily I have two more, so I can go back in when I save up enough money!
I just converted my keyboard to DVORAK and it's taken me like 30 minutes to type this.

bus guy
click image for full size and then click the new image for really full size)
This was a real interaction I watched on the bus.
Notice how my panels on the right slowly scrunch inward as the comic progresses. That always happens when I draw with pen and paper. I had a theory about it, but I don't think it's true anymore. It involved geometry and the circle described by my forearm as it rotates about my elbow while I draw.
Hopefully I'll have a lot more people reading this comic now! I handed out 100 or so little flyer things advertising it at the Stumptown Comics Fest.
